Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP) – I Believe In Father Christmas

ELP I Believe in Father Christmas

I Believe in Father Christmas, by Emerson Lake and Palmer

Originally recorded in 1975, I Believe in Father Christmas has proven to be a popular Christmas tune over the years. When first released, it reached #2 on the UK Music Charts. The song has appeared on numerous Christmas compilations.  Several versions of the song have been released, including with a full orchestra.

As with much of Emerson Lake and Palmer’s music, the theme of I Believe in Father Christmas has a classical music source, in this case, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite.

Greg Lake wrote I Believe in Father Christmas as an objection to the commercialism of Christmas, feeling that the true spirit of Christmas was being lost in the marketing of the holiday.
