Oh Well tells a compelling story – with unabashed honesty the lyrics hit the listener with truths about ourselves, others, and God. When listened to carefully, the lyrics can lead the listener to some soul-searching.
Though commonly referred to as just Oh Well, the song actually has two parts:
- Oh Well Part 1 is the powerful rock part of the song with lyrics.
- Oh Well Part 2 is strikingly different than the first portion – it’s much longer, and is a mellow instrumental, with a slightly haunting, introspective quality.

I can’t help about the shape I’m in
I can’t sing, I ain’t pretty and my legs are thin
But don’t ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to
Oh well
Now, when I talked to God I knew he’d understand
He said, “Stick by my side and I’ll be your guiding hand
But don’t ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to”
Oh well
