Inside Out — now here’s a movie both kids and adults can wrap their minds around.
Inside Out opened this past weekend. It’s a fast-paced, funny, incredibly well animated & narrated movie, with a meaningful, thought-provoking message for all ages. The story centers around a girl named Riley, whose family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. In the process, Riley loses everything that was familiar to her — her friends, her school, her favorite sport (ice hockey), and her cozy home & bedroom.
The show ingeniously depicts Riley’s emotions — joy, fear, anger, disgust, and sadness as characters living in her brain. Riley’s memories — short-term, long-term, and forgotten, are depicted as tangible objects. All sorts of troubles ensue when Riley’s memories get mixed up and disturbed.
In the end, things worked out, and Riley is a happy young girl once more. The turning point is when joy & sadness team up to help Riley confront her difficult situation, and joy & sadness give her the courage to tell her parents exactly how she feels. Riley’s parents are loving, accepting, and understanding toward Riley. And, her parents miss their old home in Minnesota, too.
Sure, Inside Out is a summer film aimed at kids, but it’s also clearly a very worthwhile show for adults. This is a movie that ought to do well at the box office.
Rotten Tomatoes gives Inside Out an incredibly high score…
Inside Out is already setting records…
Just yesterday, Forbes had this to say in an article called With ‘Inside Out,’ Pixar Returns To Fighting Form:
Last weekend the new Disney/Pixar film Inside Out set an important record: It had the best opening weekend of all time for a movie based on an original idea. To put that into context, the film’s $91 million box office made it the 41st-best opening of all time (on an unadjusted basis). But all 40 of the movies ranked above Inside Out were either based on existing characters (like Superman and Godzilla) or were sequels. While the movie didn’t end up beating Jurassic World at the box office, it doesn’t really matter.
